• Makeup of the UFLA Board
The UFLA Board of Directors is made up of members from four categores; all Board members have an equal vote in any procedings.
(A) Elected Officers: | ||
These are (1) the President, (who serves a year as President-Elect and also a year as Past President, for a total three-year term) and (2) the Recording Secretary (who takes minutes of board meetings and keeps records for the President, the Board and the Historian)
(B) Officers Appointed by the Board:
(1) the Newsletter Editor, (2) the Executive Secretary/Treasurer, and (3) delegates to UFLA, SWCOLT, JNCL-NCLIS, and the UFLA Historian. Each of these are appointed for renewable terms of three years.
(C) Elected Representatives:
The elected President or leader of each language teachers association (AAT) is invited to be a UFLA Board member for the duration of thier term; these associations currently include Arabic, ASL, Chinese, DLI, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
(D) Board Members Appointed by Cooperating Institutions:
The department of world languages at each university that offers degrees in lagnauge teaching may name a representative to the UFLA Board. In addition, the Utah State Board of Education World Language Specialist is an ex-oficio member of the Board.
• Our Directory | ||
The UFLA Board Directory is online at http://organizations.weber.edu/ufla/Board/directory.htm. As a new member, at your first convencience, send your name, board position, email, institution and a photo to the Executive Secretary/Treasurer: tmathews@weber.edu.
• Board Meetings, etc. | ||
The UFLA President is responsible for scheduling and convening any Board
meetings. Historically, we have met on the first Thrusday of each month from
September through May--our may meeting is usually convened at a restaurant
over dinner. If you will not be able to attend a meeting, it is polite to let the President or Secretary know ahead of time; however, absenses are not "excused" in any sense--members are either present and participating or they are not. Email Etiquite: When responding to an email sent to the Board, please do not use "Reply All" unless your response is pertinent to the entire Board. When you wish to send an email to the board,create a new email with a new title relevant to your communication. We recommend that you create an email group based on the list presented in the directory. |
||
• $$ for Your Constituency
Each year, Lanaguge Associations (AAT's) are eligible for support funds from
UFLA. These amount to $100 plus $2 for every member of UFLA that teaches
the association's language. This grant will be awarded AFTER the language
association has had its first activity each year (July 1 - June 30); the
activity must be open to all UFLA members who teach the language. A form to
apply for these funds is avaibable here:
http://organizations.weber.edu/ufla/Forms/AAT-Support.pdf. AAT Presidents and University Representatives should communicate information from UFLA with their colleagues (or association members). In addition, they should feel free to nominate members of thier consituency for awards and encourage them to attend and present at meetings and conferences. |
||
• Your Responsibilities
For each Board position, there is a description of duties and reponsibilities and well as ideas and often a time-line on how to accomplish the task. This informaiton is here: http://organizations.weber.edu/ufla/Policies/Documents/UFLA_BoardMemberResponsibilites.pdf. Please feel free to communicate ideas for improvement or additions by sending these to the Executive Secretary/Treasurer.
